How to File an ET1 Claim

Follow these 8 steps to submit your employment tribunal claim

Step 1

Check Eligibility

Most claims require NO minimum service: discrimination, unpaid wages, holiday pay, whistleblowing, pregnancy/maternity dismissal. Unfair dismissal (only) usually requires 2 years service.

Step 2

Contact ACAS Early Conciliation

Before filing an ET1, you must contact ACAS for early conciliation. This is mandatory and free. Call 0300 123 1100.

Step 3

Get Your Early Conciliation Certificate

ACAS will issue a certificate number within 1 month. This extends your deadline by 1 month.

Step 4

Gather Evidence

Collect: employment contract, payslips, dismissal letter, emails, witness statements, and any relevant documents.

Step 5

Download ET1 Form

Get the official Employment Tribunal claim form (ET1) from GOV.UK.

Step 6

Complete ET1 Form

Fill in all sections carefully: personal details, employer details, type of claim, and detailed description of what happened.

Step 7

Submit Before Deadline

Submit your ET1 form online before the deadline (usually 3 months minus 1 day from dismissal/last incident).

Step 8

Await Tribunal Response

The tribunal will acknowledge your claim and send a copy to your employer. A hearing date will be scheduled.

⚠️ Important: This is general guidance only. For advice specific to your situation, contact ACAS (0300 123 1100) or consult a qualified employment solicitor.
